10 years of Salvador Dalí in Berlin - celebrate with us!

We celebrate our 10th anniversary beginning the 5th of February 2019. For 10 days, we offer attractive gifts for museum visitors from Berlin and around the world for our 10 Year Anniversary.

Ten years ago on February 5, 2009, the museum "Dalí - The Exhibition at Potsdamer Platz" opened directly in Berlin - exactly 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the death of exceptional artist Salvador Dalí in 1989.

Since then, the museum has presented the public with more than 450 original exhibits in our permanent exhibition. Our Museum is over 1,500 square meters in size, over 2 floors and thus permanently gives one of the most comprehensive insights into Salvador Dalí's virtuosic and experimental work; showing his mastery in almost all techniques of art. We are located right in the heart of the vibrant cultural metropolis of Berlin. From a collection of nearly 3,000 works, provided by international collectors worldwide, alternating exhibits will show an exciting cross-section of Dalí's life and work.

"We are very happy with the great feedback that we have recieved from over 1.5 million visitors over the past 10 years, and we are proud that we have succeeded as a team in welcoming so many visitors from all over the world. We are thrilled that Salvador Dalí's art has the ability to delight - especially as we are the first privately initiated and supported art museum in Germany, which opened without any use of funds and operated continuously without patronage in this way, "said museum director Carsten Kollmeier. "We are recognised by the German Museums Association as an integral part of the thriving museum scene in Berlin. Each year, based on our number of visitors, we are included in the top 10% of all museums in Germany."

This was not a guarantee for us in 2009, even with our location in heart of Berlin. After Potsdamer Platz was renovated, it was a slow process for it to become a destination to visitors to Berlin. It was like a pioneering work, attemptimting to show Leipziger Platz in a new and modern light, especially to Berlin natives. Large parts of the opposite side of the street were still undeveloped, an there was a lot of vacancy in the existing buildings. Therefore, constant assured contact with customers was not guaranteed. Since that time our location has changed a lot. The south side of Leipziger Platz has established itself as a true cultural and museum location. Attracted by this museum, the Korean Cultural Center opened in the same year and - also initiated and developed by museum maker Carsten Kollmeier - 2015, the Spy Museum Berlin also joined us in the immediate vicinity. The north side of Leipziger Platz has developed into an intruiging shopping center since the opening of the Mall of Berlin. Culture and commerce can thus be perfectly combined here and offers a unique combination option for visitors to Leipziger Platz. As Salvador Dali already understood in his lifetime, the unification of a city center is an important step in solidifying an artistic movement, and can serve as a model for entire generations of artists to this day.

"When we opened 10 years ago on Leipziger Platz, many thought we were crazy," remembers director Carsten Kollmeier, "whereupon we already quoted Dalí with: 'The only difference between me and a madman is, I'm not crazy!' and we were right. Since then, in addition to Salvador Dali's'Museo teatro Gala Dali' which was opened in 1974 in Figueras (Spain) and 'The Dali Museum' in Saint Petersburg (Florida), which was founded in 1972 in Cleveland, Ohio by his greatest collector and patron was opened, we have become one of only three official Dali museums in the world. "

For the 10th anniversary, the museum wants to thank its guests and native Berliners with a number of attractive gifts:

Starting February 5, 2019, there will be a brand new museum catalog for the Anniversary price of 19.95 € instead of 29.50 € (which corresponds to a discount of more than 30%) and other selected products from the museum and online shop will be offered at a reduced price for 10 days.

For all Berliners, there is a "2 for 1" anniversary ticket for 10 days (proof of residence with ID card and based on the regular admission fee).

On Saturday, February 9, 2019, there will also be a very special present in cooperation with the two artists Martin Lotz and Henry Ruck from the Lithowerkstatt Berlin, which has been a partner of the museum for 10 years:
At 1:15 pm and 2:15 pm, all museum visitors are invited to enjoy two live demonstrations at the historic lithographic press free of charge and to be introduced to the specifics of printmaking art techniques by two renowned connoisseurs. These performances must normally be booked for a fee of € 145, but on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the museum, they are free of charge for all participants (participation subject to availability and with a valid entrance ticket to the museum).

"Come into my brain", all the visitors can follow this invitation of Salvador Dalí and dive into the surreal world of the Spanish artist in the museum "Dalí - The Exhibition at Potsdamer Platz". There are five public tours every day in German and English. Our Dalí tour guides, known here as Dalí_Scouts, guide the participants in a dialogue through Dali's fantastical dream world at 12:30, 14:00 (English), 15:30, 17:00 and 18:30 (English. They give an in-depth look and insight into Dalí's imaginative world of thought, his eccentric life and his artistic works. Of course, visitors can also discover the surreal dream worlds of Dalí on their own. This is helped by the innovative multimedia guide, which is available in several languages and which you can use on your own smartphone or the short guide in practical pocket size in German and English.

For the 10th anniversary of Salvador Dalí in the capital city of Berlin, the museum welcomes all guests to rediscover the Surrealists for themselves.
Happy Birthday and Feliz cumpleaños DaliBerlin!
